I’ve been editing essays since I was in college at a community college. I teach high school English and I had to revise many of my essays in class. I edited a lot of my high school English course essays and I have to say I’m still in awe of the editing process. There are so many decisions that one has to make and there are so many mistakes that were made.
Well, we all make mistakes in writing, editing, and revision, so why don’t we all get better at it? It’s because we all have different writing styles and have different writing preferences. What I’d like to see more of on essay writing is for teachers and students to learn how to look at writing differently, to see the value of writing as a whole, and how to decide which parts of a sentence or a paragraph are worth the edit.
I am not going to go over every single mistake, but I will say that I think one more thing would help essay writing to be more efficient, and to be more thoughtful: Writing is a process, and many of us have different writing styles. So when looking at a sentence or a paragraph, we should be conscious of the different writing styles of people, and of how they use language and structure.
